There are many benefits to motorcycle riding, including practicality, saving money and the freedom and exhilaration of riding. Of course, to maximize your enjoyment, you should always keep safety at the forefront of your mind. Even the most experienced riders have to be aware of other motorists and road hazards. Here are some basic tips that will help prevent accidents and injuries and keep you riding for years to come:

1) Wear protective gear. Even if your state doesn’t require it by law, wearing a helmet and other protective gear is the easiest way to prevent catastrophic injury. Motorcycle riding is about more than just freedom. It’s about preserving your life and protecting your family and friends from grief and hardship if you get injured or die.

2) Keep up to date on safety courses and certifications, and make sure you have a proper license to operate your bike.

3) Be vigilant on the road. Remember that many motorists are not attuned to motorcycles on the road. So it’s up to you to be hyper-aware of your surroundings and anticipate motorists entering your space. Take your time at intersections and during lane changes.

4) Inspect your bike frequently. Before you ride, do a walk-around and look for any obvious maintenance issues, such as low tire pressure. If anything looks amiss, don’t ride until you or a mechanic investigates further.

5) Watch the curves. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA.gov), half of motorcycle fatalities are related to failure to safely negotiate a curve. Be sure to brake and steer safely through any curve, no matter how gentle it seems.

6) Never ride while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Avoid riding when you are sleep deprived, since exhaustion slows your reaction time.

7) Carry motorcycle insurance to protect yourself. For more information on insurance options, see our motorcycle insurance guide.
